Following the defending champions’ victory over Morocco on Wednesday night, France will play Argentina in the World Cup championship match.
There is a chance that the current champions will retain their title for the first time since 1962, as no team has done so since Brazil. Despite not always being the most well-liked person, Didier Deschamps is aiming for his third championship and second while leading the national squad. That is quite an accomplishment considering the key player injuries prior to the tournament.
Any doubts about Lionel Messi’s dedication to the Argentina national team have been put to rest. It’s difficult to avoid comparing the 35-year-old Messi’s performance in Qatar to Diego Maradona’s in 1986, when Dieguito helped his team to victory. In his final World Cup, the arguably greatest player of all time is closer than ever to taking the trophy home.
Messi vs. Mbappe
Lionel Messi of Argentina and Kylian Mbappé of France will face off in Qatar 2022 for the chance to win the World Cup title, the golden boot for most goals scored, and the golden ball for the greatest player overall. Messi and Mbappé both have five goals, but Messi has three assists to Mbappé’s two, giving him the lead in the battle for the golden boot.
The two №10s are represented by various scenarios in the final. Mbappé, 23, played a key role for Les Bleus in Russia four years ago and is now vying for a second World Cup gold medal. Messi, the 35-year-old captain of Argentina, has participated in five World Cups for his nation but has never taken home the championship. With his 11th goal, a penalty against Croatia, he already surpassed Argentina’s record for most World Cup goals. This weekend, he is expected to break yet another record. In what will likely be his final World Cup game, Messi will create history on Sunday by making his men’s record-tying 26th.
Head to head history and prediction
These two countries have previously faced off three times at World Cups, with Argentina triumphing in both the inaugural competition in 1930 and on their way to their 1978 victory at home.
However, Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the round of 16 in Russia, when France prevailed in a seven-goal thriller.
It’s always difficult to make a prediction in a final match, and the odds around the world show exactly that. 50% each, like a coin toss.
The World Cup final is scheduled for a 3pm GMT kick-off time on Sunday December 18, 2022. The Lusail Stadium in Qatar will host the showpiece fixture.
